Exploring Film Criticism With A New Perspective

Over the course of the semester how I view films has definitely evolved. When I approach a film I now dive past the surface of what is scene on screen. I think about the development of the story line, I think about how the music helps to develop the mood of the story, and the effects that go into creating a truly good quality film. The effects that allow us to experience worlds that we could originally only visit in our imaginations. When I watch films like “Star Wars”, “Aquaman”, and “Thor Ragnarok” I will now think about the effects that allow us to experience another galaxy, an underwater world, and a whole other planet.

One of the things that I look for more than anything now, that I originally did not, is story development. When I went and watched “Avengers Endgame” yesterday I found myself sitting in the theater thinking, “Okay this is the inciting incident, this is the climax, and this is the resolution, things are starting to fall into place”. When I was watching the film I unconsciously paid extremely close attention to the music used in the film for certain moments. In the saddest moment of the film I found myself thinking, the composer chose this music to give the movie a sort of mourning mood. I paid attention to specific lines in the film (spoiler alert) “I love you 3,000” which contributed to the overall theme being conveyed as the story developed.

When I was watching the television show “Criminal Minds” I noticed the camera would often choose certain camera angles to provide the point of view of the killer. This type of cinematography I noticed really enhanced the quality of the episode. I noticed this specifically in the episode “Gatekeeper”. In “Gatekeeper” the episode was filmed often, looking from the windows of the building. Filming from the windows allowed the audience to see things from the killers eyes, as he stocked his prey. One of the other things I noticed while viewing the episode was the color theory, which was used when the agents are profiling the killer. There are darker tones being presented in the lighting of the scene. These darker tones triggered my realization that these darker tones were used to contribute to the serious tone trying being presented. The lighting used later in the episode after the baby is born, is bright and peaceful. The lighting in this specific scenes create tones of peace and purity.

Even when I am simply watching a television show or movie simply for my own entertainment I unconsciously pay attention to details that I did not before. These details help me to see the bigger picture being shown in films. I am now able to use what I have learned to go past the surface, past the storyline. I can now understand how the cinematography, the special effects, the composition, the character arc, all ties into what is a good quality film. I can notice the message being conveyed just with the colors being used, and the sounds being played in the background. A good story needs a good setup.

The Girl On Fire Strikes Flames In The Hearts of Moviegoers

Within the state lines of North Carolina a Fantasy/Science Fiction film “The Hunger Games” directed by (Gary Ross), Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), from district twelve spark a fire in theaters and in our hearts. When bubbly, pink-haired Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) from the capital strolls into district 12 for a reaping, that will either change the lives of two young individuals forever, or end it. When sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen’s little sister Prim (Willow Shields) is chosen to be one of these individuals, Katniss steps up to take her place as one of the district 12 tributes. When Peeta is chosen as the male tribute a little secret is spilled out on tv, which starts up a rumor that Katniss and Peeta are star crossed lovers. Though Katniss is not the happiest about being star-crossed lovers, she will later learn from her mentor Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), that this little rumor would save her life when she is fighting for her life in “The Hunger Games”. Twenty-four individuals step into the arena of the Hunger Games, and rules say only one will come out alive!

This film gives the audience a theoretical future for the world. “The Hunger Games” takes place in North America, which is separated out into twelve separate districts, which are mostly poor and and barely able to survive. The Capital is another area in North America that makes all the rules for the districts, they are exceedingly wealthy because they get all the profits of the districts. We can see the wealth and comfort of the Capital with the environment and clothing of the citizens, compared to the environment and clothing of the citizens in the districts. These different environments contribute to the overall theme of the movie. With the Capital living in comfort and wealth, and the districts shaking with fear, and starving to death, we can also see that change is what is severely needed in the society of Panem. All it took was one girl finding the courage to speak out against the capital, starting up a rebellion in the districts, to make a change!

The most amazing part of the film is the flip in the gender roles that we see in the film “The Hunger Games”. In most films you have the male having the brave, courageous, and would rather act than talk traits, but in “The Hunger Games” Katniss is the one that acquires these traits. Peeta is the more passionate and submissive, wears his emotions on his sleeves. You do not often see Peeta being the one to save the day.

Katniss is an Everyman hero, fighting a Character vs Society battle with the capital. Katniss has no special powers, Katniss grew up in an extremely poor household, having to sneak around just to keep her family from starving to death, but Katniss does not let her limitations stop her from doing what is right and bringing the change that the society is sorely lacking. Katniss uses the courage that she has deep within her to fight against the Capital. I think Katniss is fed up with the wrong ways of the Capital, and has decided that she is going to make a change and bring hope to the society of Panem. President Snow says in the film that too much hope is dangerous, but Katniss is fighting back against President Snow, and giving more and more hope with every arrow she fires.

Overall the movie “The Hunger Games” was a successful movie. The acting was great, I could see the emotions of the characters within the eyes of the actors. I think the audiences could easily connect emotionally with the characters in the film because even though the characters had superior qualities the actors and script writers did a good job of humanizing the characters. The graphics of the film were well done, the environment of the film looked realistic, such as the arena that the “Hunger Games” took place in. The wolf mutts used at the end of the film were really amazing, and unbelievably realistic on screen. The development of the plot in the film were really enjoyable, the film was able to keep you on the edge of you seat for most of the film, a lot of that being because of the action going on in the arena, and the traits of some of the characters such as, Cato (Alexander Ludwig) and Clove (Isabelle Fuhrman), it is hard to believe that a society could teach citizens to have murderous impulses like these characters did.

The editing and special effects were really amazing to watch in this film, such as the flames that were edited in on the costumes of Katniss and Peeta, for their interviews with the Capital. Since this movie is suppose to depict a futuristic world editing and special effects would have been a huge part of the creation of a film like “The Hunger Games”, bringing a society to life that has not yet come to pass takes a lot of creativity and thought to bring to life, and the editing and special effects team did a job well done, grade A work on my part!

The Sci-Fi/Fantasy film Hunger Games gave hope to the people of Panem, blew the minds of today’s society, and also touched the hearts of those watching the big screens. “The Hunger Games” went on to produce three more sequels, and was the starter for a successful career in the film industry for individuals like the stunning actress, Jennifer Lawrence. It is seven years later and Jennifer Lawrence is still the girl on fire that we all grew to love in theaters seven years ago.

Half-Breed Hero Saves Land and Sea!

What was once the laughing stock of DC is taking the audience by surprise, and Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) is not pulling any punches.

“Hey, buddy, are you that fish boy from the TV?”  “Oh, great.”
“It’s fish man. What do you want?”

Director (James Wan) is putting a new spin on DC’s “Aquaman”, while there are plenty of jokes throughout the film, this movie lets you know Aquaman is not because he is not some fishboy, he is the”Aquaman”.

This Fantasy/Science Fiction film tells the story of half-breed “Arthur Curry” son of lighthouse keeper Thomas Curry (Temuera Morrison), and Queen Atlanna (Nicole Kidman). When Arthur’s power thirsty half-brother, King Orm (Patrick Wilson) wages war against the surface, Princess Mera (Amber Heard) convinces Arthur to venture across the seven seas to uncover King Atlan’s trident. Along the way Arthur will come face to face with one of his worst enemies, Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), and discover whether he has what it takes to fulfill his destiny as protector of the seas.

“Protector of The Seas”
PChttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KKsIhZnLYA

One of the main focuses in “Aquaman” is a hero is greater than a king, and do not judge a place until you get to know it. King Orm is enraged at the surface for polluting the sea, while Orm is not wrong, his way of dealing with the issues are. Aquaman is the hero in the story, he is of both land and sea, he does not fight for just the land, or sea, Arthur fights for everyone, giving him his heroic quality.

While both Mera and Arthur both want to avoid war between the two, Arthur holds a grudge against Atlantis, and does not realize how great a place it is until he got the chance to experience it. Mera held a grudge against the land for polluting the seas, but she learns not to judge the surface world until she got a chance to see how great it was.

There are various conflicts within the movie “Aquaman” . The main conflict being between Arthur and his brother Orm, but Arthur also faces internal conflict within himself, with blaming himself for the execution of his mother, and taking his birthright as king of Atlantis. There is also a character vs society conflict in the film. Arthur being from two different worlds makes him not fully accepted by either worlds. It was not until, Arthur retrieved the trident of Atlan did the sea finally accept him.

You would think that you would need tons of water to film a movie about a guy who has a connection with the sea, but less water is used in “Aquaman” than you think. “Aquaman” takes advantage of special effects to create the look of an underwater Atlantean city. Much of the film is shot in front of a blue screen, with the actors hung up in rigs, and the special effects team did the rest to create the looks of an underwater world. This way of filming put a large strain on the actors though, especially guys like Jason Momoa. Jason would say to director, Wan “James, I don’t think I’ll be having anymore kids anytime soon” says “Alexander (2018)”.

“Aquaman” was an outstanding movie, I could not have done a better job myself. The actors blew it out of the water at portraying the characters, and getting to the core of who their characters are.The story was easy to follow. The special effects were amazing, I never would of guessed that the underwater scenes were anything less than what they appear. Best of all, the film gave the audience an improved point of view on the hero Aquaman. I would give this film an A+ grade, a five star rating.

This movie was more than entertainment. The story teaches lessons about unity and acceptance among all, and looking past the your grudges, and just simply doing what is right for the world. This film is an excellent film for PG-13 rating. The film is great for family , but due to a little crude language it is not for younger viewers.

If you enjoy a heroic adventure, I would suggest diving in with Aquaman and Mera, explore adventures all the way from the Atlantean city in the deep blue ocean, to the dried out sandy Sahara!

The Start of “Adam Sandler”

Adam Sandler was a renowned comedian in the 90s, and on into the twenty-first century. The surprising thing is Sandler never considered a career in film, until his older brother, Scott Sandler gave him the push he needed. When Adam was seventeen years old his brother encouraged him to perform at the “Boston Comedy Club”. Even though his brother is credited with giving him the push to become a comedian, Adam Sandler was inspired most by his father. Sandler’s father was not a comedian, but was said to have an awful temper. Instead of fighting him like shampoo and conditioner, Adam grew a sense of humor to help calm his dad down with a joke or two.

“Adam Sandler’s” Career Takes Off

Adam Sandler has grown far in his career as a comedian. Adam has starred in multiple films throughout his career including ;”Billy Madison” (1995), “Happy Gilmore” (1996), Blended (2014), “Grown Ups” (2010), “Hotel Transylvania” (2012), and many more. Sandler has shown to be unstoppable at the box office, specifically with films such as, “Hotel Transylvania 2” (2015), which raked in as much as $43 million dollars it’s first weekend. Some critics do say that Adams’s humor tends to be silly and childish, but his comedic skills have given him a solid title with the box office and movie goers.

Stepping Out of The Comfort Zone of Comedy

While Adam is specifically known for his work in comedy, he has had a few successes outside the field of comedy. “Reign Over Me” was a film that aired in (2007), and was a big hit with critics and audiences. The film is a family drama, that tells the story of Charlie Fineman (Adam Sandler), who sadly loses his family in the terrorist attack of 9/11. Adam has also starred in the (1996) action film, “Bulletproof” , that tells the story of Archie Moses who works for Frank Colton (James Caan), a drug lord. Moses is unknowingly friends with cop, Jack Carter (Damon Wayans). Carter must bring in Moses to testify against Colton on the stand. Adam has even starred in the (2002) thriller, Punch-Drunk Love. The story of Barry Egan (Adam Sandler), bathroom supply business owner, who is prone to violent outbursts. What Exactly Makes Sandler So Great?

Adam has been a beloved and successful comedian/actor for the last 30 years, but like us all Adam Sandler has had his ups and downs in his career. With films such as”50 First Dates”, “Hotel Transylvania 2”, and “The Meyerowitz Stories” Adam Has blown it out of the water, but films such as “Big Daddy”, which was extremely successful. The film however resulted in Adam winning a Razzie Award for worst actor. The film “Jack and Jill” was the worst rated film of Sandler’s career, and won all ten categories in the Razzie Awards, but Adam does not dwell on these failures. He uses these ups and downs in his life to humanize himself, and this makes him easy to identify with. Adam does not strive to be anyone else, but himself. He uses his own experiences to be the funniest version of himself. Adam never tries too hard when he performs, he just goes out and has fun with it!

Did “Pitch Perfect” Hit The Right Note

Do you ever use music to “Aca-scuse” the stresses of school life? That is what is happening in the music-filled comedy, 2012 film “Pitch Perfect” directed by Jason Moore. “Pitch Perfect” tells the story of the college student Beca (Anna Kendrick). Beca attends Barden University in hopes of doing nothing more than sitting in her room DJing her mix ups. She finds herself in a acapella group called the Barden Bellas. The Bellas try to sing their way to the finals with womens classics, against their rivals the Treblemakers, led by Bumper (Adam Devine), who sing modern songs that the crowd and judges much rather prefer. Beca and Aubrey, the leader of the Bellas butt heads throughout the movie about which songs are gonna hit the high notes.

Aubrey and Chloe work together to prepare their new recruits, this may not be easy when you have someone like Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) “I’m doing horizontal running”. The Barden Bellas appear with their newly unique team of singer’s at their first competition, the audience is not impressed. A few competitions later the Bellas realize they need to regroup and think of a new way to tackle the finals, or else they have no chance of defeating their rivals. After a bit of a fight Aubrey loosens the reins, and lets Beca take the lead. The team is able to use their differences to their advantage, and find their sound.

The movie Pitch Perfect is categorized as a backdrop musical. The use of music in the story is essential to the storyline. The plot of the story is a female acapella group is striving to beat their rivals the Treblemakers in the acapella finals. The Barden Bellas are motivated to prove they are the best acapella group. Without music in the story there would be no story to tell.

The Barden Bellas have little in common, each is different than the rest. The one thing that the girls all have in common, is their love for music. It is through music that this unique group is able to find perfect harmony with each other. Finding the right sound was the resolution to the story. When the Bellas were able to come together in harmony they were able to crush it at finals.

The movie “Pitch Perfect” focuses upon conveying the message, change and equality. The Barden Bellas were staying with tradition, and doing women classics. The Bellas learn that they needed to make a change to succeed in competition. The equality aspect of the movie is tied at the beginning of the movie the competition hosts John (John Michael Higgins), and Gail (Elizabeth Banks) make the point that all women teams do not normally succeed in winning. At the end of the movie we see equality among men and women.

The technical aspects of the film were wonderful. The dancing and singing was on point, and fit well with the environment of the film. The a capella performances in the movie were well directed, believable as real acapella performers. The acting and set design was well developed. It was easy to believe that this movie would be real life. The music in the movie was absolutely exceptional because someone could see and hear these musical performances and they would remember them fondly even if it was not the genre of music they prefer. The lighting and framing in the movie was successful, in conveying the setting of the film, and the mood being created in a specific scene. The angles could tell you how personal a scene maybe based the close up of the cameras.

This movie was successful. The characters personalities were well developed and unique. You could feel as if you could connect with the characters and easily differentiate the characters. The music was chosen extremely well, the music fit well with the morals being given and humor within the movie. The musical performances were remarkable and well-developed in sound and choreography. The language in the film added to the humor of the film, but if the language in the film was not as crude, it could be opened up to younger audiences.

Aca-scuse The Language

The film “Pitch Perfect” is entertaining but there is a deeper meaning behind these songs. You can walk away from this film having learned a life lesson on change and equality. These characters teach us that change is a good thing and can bring you to success, sometimes that change can show the equality that was sorely lacking. The Bellas going modern brought change, and proof that women can be just as skilled as men.

This film is rated PG_13 because the crude language and humor within the movie is inappropriate for younger viewers. The language includes cursing and sexual references that would not be appropriate for the ears of viewers younger than 13.

“Pitch Perfect’s” musical stylings and diverse characters hit a high note in my book. If you do not believe me listen to Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) they “Crushed it”!

Sights and Sounds Evaluation: “Solo A Star Wars Story”

“Solo” is a science fiction film for all ages. The film tells the journey that Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) goes on with a 190 year old wookie named Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo), and a group of galactic criminals led by Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson). Solo works with these criminals in order to earn money to buy a ship, so that he can return to the planet Corellia to save his childhood love, Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke). They end up failing to deliver a valuable case of coaxium to the crime boss, Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany). Han Solo is able to persuade Dryden and his Lieutenant, Qi’ra into stealing unrefined coaxium from a mine on the planet Kessel. To pull this off, they will need a fast and great ship to get them there, and luckily Qi’ra happened to know Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover), who owns such a ship, Millennium Falcon. Lando is willing to help as long as he gets his share of the profits. Tobias Beckett, a galactic criminal, Chewy, a 190 year old wookie, Qi’ra, a Crimson Dawn lieutenant, and Han Solo, a resilient pilot go on an adventure, planning to steal for the crime boss, but there are some twists and turns that come along the way.

There are multiple conflicts happening in the movie “Solo”. The main conflict in the movie is the hurdles Solo has to jump through to get the credits he needs to buy his own ship and save Qi’ra. There are other conflicts in the story, such as their fight to possess the coaxium they need to satisfy the crime boss, Vos. All of these conflicts happen because Han wants to get his own ship and save Qi’ra. The main conflict would be a mixture between character vs character and character vs society. It would be character vs society because Han does have to rebel against the rules of society in order to achieve his goal, and in the end Han ends up helping a rebellion against the Empire, which would be the same thing as a political or cultural rebellion. The conflict would also fall under character vs character, because in order for Solo to be successful in his pursuit he must fight against Dryden Vos, so that he can save Qi’ra from having to work under his jurisdiction.

The theme to the movie “Solo” has a lot to do with the title of the movie, and how important friendships are. At the beginning of the movie when Han is asked who his people are, he replies that he is all alone and that he has no people, giving him the name Solo. When Han faces off with Tobias Beckett at the end, more of this message is given to us. Solo told Tobias that his problem was that he believes everyone is like him, that nobody should trust anybody. Han is not afraid to create trust with someone because friendships are something everyone in society needs. You need someone to always have your back which I believe is the overall message of the movie.

Cinematography and color theory are a big part of this film. One of the greatest things that the camera angles give you in this film is point of view. When Han and Chewy are trying to drive the ship to Savareen to refine the coaxium, the camera angles give a point of view that seems as if you are sitting on the ship with them. Camera angles in the movie were more close up and intense when the scene had a more serious tone to it, so that the audience could feel a deep connection with the characters in certain moments. When the setting would change the angles would always zoom out to where you could get a good luck at the surroundings so that you could see what the setting was and the situations that the characters were in such as when Solo was in battle while he was in the Navy. Color theory was used multiple times to tell when you are about to face a demonic character, such as when Solo was facing the worm-like, light sensitive matriarch. Even though the setting was dark because the creature was light sensitive, the lighting also created a demonic tone to the atmosphere and let you know that whatever was about to happen is ominous. Lighting and camera angles tie in together to convey a certain tone for the situation in the film.

The film “Solo” was nominated for many awards pertaining to visual effects. I do believe the film earned those nominations because the scenes in the movie were truly able to give you a visual experience that made it seem as if you were actually on another planet and zooming through the galaxy. Within this film, they were able to use visual effects to create alien-like creatures and they would not be able to make them look so life like had it not been for the films great work with these effects.

Another area that the film “Solo” excels in is sound. Sound is something that is used in the film a lot for foreshadowing something, normally an event that would bring peril. Sound was also used to create the feeling of being in a battle with the crashing and shooting you would hear in the background, such as when Han Solo was on the battlefield while he was in the navy. All Star Wars movies were great at using sound effects to tell you when stormtroopers or Darth Vader would soon be appearing. If you were to close your eyes and simply listen to the film you could tell what was going on, based on the sounds you were hearing. Sound effects were used a great amount when the spaceships were struck, or crashed to exaggerate the crash, and also to just enhance the situation. One of the coolest things about the sound is that simply by the music you hear in the background you can tell if the character or situation is good or bad based on the music playing in the background.

“Solo” was nominated for many awards, but one of the awards they not only were nominated for but won was IFMCA Award Film Music Composition of the Year. Star Wars movies have always been known for their music and sound, and the movie “Solo” is no exception. “Solo” definitely blew it out of the water with their sound effects and composition, but more than anything the foreshadowing stood out to me the most.

I would call the film “Solo” a success, but every film has room for improvement. “Solo” certainly gave us a lot of information on Han Solo’s background, and was a good quality film. The film was able to keep my interest all throughout the movie. The movie had a lot of competition with previous Star Wars movies because these movies have always been a big hit in the film industry. The film could always be better, but the film was great. If I were to grade the film, I would give the film a 95 or A because the film was engaging and definitely made standards as a quality film, but I think I would have given a little more information then what was given at the ending of the movie. Also I think there is room for additional details concerning the relationship between Han and Qi’ra. I believe this would give closure to the film.- Caitlyn Hamrick

Two black Cadillacs driving in a slow parade
Headlights shining bright in the middle of the day
One is for his wife,
The other for the woman who loved him at night
Two black Cadillacs meeting for the first time

The first verse of the song tells you that there is a conflict going on between a wife and mistress. Based on the quote “One is for his wife and the other is for the woman who loved at night” you can guess that the main conflict in the story is a cheating husband.

And the preacher said he was a good man
And his brother said he was a good friend
But the women in the two black veils didn’t bother to cry

The next verse in the story tells what the setting of the story is, which would be a funeral based on the quote “The preacher said he was a goodman and his brother said he was a good friend” “the woman in the two black veils did not bother to cry. This quote in the verse poses the main stories question it’s the funeral of a man they loved, that was apparently a good man so why would the women not bother to cry.

Yeah they took turns laying a rose down
Threw a handful of dirt into the deep ground
He’s not the only one who had a secret to hide
Bye bye, bye bye, bye Bye

The wife and the mistress are at the graveside and saying their goodbyes to the cheating husband. We know based on the quote “He’s not the only one who had a secret to hide” that something is more than likely going on between the two woman and that they have done something more than likely to the husband. This quote hints that the wife and mistress probably had a hand in the husbands death. We can get a hint that the Two Black Cadillacs are not talking about the cars but the woman in the story because they not only are in black for a funeral and losing their significant other, but because they have some dirt on their hands, and have a secretly darkside in the situation. Also finding out that the two woman have a secret with one another that would be our inciting incident because that would be a hint towards what is going to happen and the turning point in the story.

Two black Cadillacs, two black Cadillacs

Two months ago his wife called the number on his phone
Turns out he’d been lying to both of them for oh so long
They decided then he’d never get away with doing this to them
Two black Cadillacs waiting for the right time, the right time

In this verse of the story you get a flashback to two months ago about how the wife and the mistress found about one another. We see here that the wife and the mistress decided to not let this go, but take matters into their own hands. You can guess here that they decided to more than likely kill the husband for what he has done. At this point in the the story you are getting to the climax of the story. Tension is at its highest point in the story and the conflict is being dealt with.

And the preacher said he was a good man
And his brother said he was a good friend
But the women in the two black veils didn’t bother to cry
Bye bye, bye bye
Yeah they took turns laying a rose down
Threw a handful of dirt into the deep ground
He’s not the only one who had a secret to hide
Bye bye, bye bye, bye Bye

Yeah yeah

It was the first and the last time they saw each other face to face
They shared a crimson smile and just walked away
And left the secret at the grave

In this verse of the song we are starting to have our questions answered. In the small quote “Shared crimson smile and just walked away and left the secret at the grave” we find out why the two did not bother to cry and we assume that they are responsible for his death. The two women are letting things fall into place. This would be the resolution of the song. When the song says “and left the secret at the grave” it is a way of saying this where they are going to end their story and part ways.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

If this song were to be made into a film I would definitely say that it would be a drama film because the entire song is about drama going on in a marriage with a cheating husband. The plot of the story is completely created dealing with the drama of this marriage.

The story does in a way follow the Freytag story pyramid because it does have rising action, climax, and a resolution. The story does however start in the present and go to the past then come back to the present, so the climax of the story actually occurs two months prior to the present that the story takes place.

The heroes in this story would probably be labeled as anti-heroes because even though they are dealing with someone who did an awful thing they do not follow the traditional hero route because normally the hero does not secretly kill their cheating husband. Anti-heroes are really interesting and the main character being and anti-hero is probably one of the things that makes the song very interesting.

I think Carrie Underwood herself would suit the part of the vengeful wife the best because she is not only a great singer, but a great actress as well. Since the song was her own I think that she would definitely have the most knowledge and motivation to bring the story to life.
